Summertime is a great time to enjoy the beautiful weather, take some trips with the family and enjoy the great outdoors! I know many of you are trying to find things to do with your kids during the summer months or this is the time of the year where you can work on organizing projects in your home. I wanted to give you a few small tasks and/or projects that you can do during the summer with your kids and to tackle them now that the weather is better.
If you want to work on an organizing project with your kids and teach them how to keep things organized, maybe a good place to start is in the garage. In the summer months, kids are outside a lot more and they are in the garage to get their bikes and play with outside toys. And you are using the lawn mower and garden tools and you need to have easy access to them. When the weather is nice I would recommend spending maybe 2 to 3 hours in the garage and clean out any old items that have been damaged by the winter weather and get rid of items that you no longer use. If you want or need to store more items in the garage, check out the variety of shelving units that will help you to get things off the floor and organized. Also if you want to get your car in the garage, by using shelving units and bike racks on the wall this will help increase your space so you have room for your car. Check out your local hardware stores and also Home Depot, Menards or Lowe’s.
Now that school is out for the summer, now is a great time to clean out your kids backpacks. Go through the paperwork that may have been left in there and the desk area where your kids did their homework. Also this is a great time for all parents to go through their desks at home and organize some of your work projects or your personal paperwork. Maybe only take about 1 or 2 hours to do these projects so you don’t feel like you are spending the whole day organizing and you have time to enjoy the summer weather!
Another great organizing project to work on is to organize and clean out your kids bedrooms. If your kids are going into 8th grade or leaving to go away for college now is the time to really purge, sort and organize things in their rooms. Get rid of or donate clothes that may be considered too young for your kids or have outgrown them and store away your kids memorabilia items. And if your kids are going away to college start purging items in their rooms and make a list of things that they will be taking to college. I have worked with many kids organizing their bedrooms and they may not be excited to start the project but in the end they love that they can find things and we get rid of clothes that don’t fit them and we always find lost money!
Summertime is a time to enjoy the weather and by taking on some summer projects it will make you feel great and you will accomplish a great deal in a short time. Also it would be a time for you to help teach your kids on how to keep things organized and it keeps them busy! I hope you all have a great summer!
