Organizing your garage can be a simple process if you look at each area as a separate category just like I tell all of my clients! This is a great time to get your garage in order so you are able to enjoy it during the summer months and the kids can play with their outside toys. Here are a few tips and suggestions for the best way to organize your garage no matter the size of your space.
First step only look at one category and purge, sort and organize those items. For example, go through all of your garden items and dispose of the pots that are cracked and damaged and if you have too many plastic flower holders, recycle the ones you will not be using this year. Gather all of the grass seed and weed killer bags and other yard bags so you know what you have so you don’t go out and purchase items you all ready have. Also, check out all of your garden tools and dispose of ones that are broken or rusty and are no longer usable. Organizing them in a clear bin is a great way to store and keep them safe so no one is injured and then put them on a shelf in the garage.
Second step to get your garage organized is to have sturdy and functional shelving units. There are several different types of garage shelving units and you can purchase sturdy plastic units or shelves with doors on them to cover up the items on the shelves. One important factor is to always measure the storage bins and items you will be putting on the shelves so the bins fit on the shelves properly. The shelving units I like are the 24″ deep units and either 4 or 5 shelves work out best. These can be found at any Home Depot, Lowe’s or Menards stores.
Garages cover a large area so only look at and organize one area at a time. For example only focus and organize one wall at a time and then another day work on another wall and/or category. You should try to limit the items you have in your garage such as garden items, outside toys/bikes and lawn mowers and snow blowers. If you live in a part of the country where you are dealing with harsh winters, I know keeping your car in your garage is a huge benefit and you will save on wear and tear on your car!
